HOPTON CASTLE PRESERVATION TRUST
Besieged in the English Civil War. Abandoned for centuries. Now lovingly restored and open to all, thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the dedication of our community.
Visit
The castle and its surroundings are open to visitors all year round. Bring a camera, a pair of walking boots, and a sense of wonder.
Admission
Free entry with illustrated leaflet. Donations are warmly welcomed to help cover annual maintenance costs.
Opening Times
Open daily during daylight hours. The site is unstaffed but fully accessible via the new pathway and car park.

Hopton Castle, Craven Arms, Shropshire SY7 0QF. Tucked in the Clun Valley between Craven Arms and Clun.

History
This romantic ruin is all that remains of the medieval Hopton Castle, a stone keep that has stood watch over the Clun Valley since the 13th century. Built as a border fortress on the turbulent Welsh Marches, it witnessed centuries of power struggles between English lords and Welsh princes.
The castle gained lasting notoriety during the English Civil War. In 1644, a small Parliamentarian garrison held out against Royalist forces in a siege that became one of the most infamous episodes of the conflict. The events that followed the surrender remain a dark chapter in Civil War history.
After centuries of neglect, the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust was formed to save the ruin. In 2006, over one million pounds was secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, and other supporters to purchase, repair, and open the castle to the public.
